Visual Arts and Design Major | 2020

UAC Code: 754607

This major is available for students studying the Bachelor of Creative Arts.

A major study in Visual Arts and Design is suitable for students who wish to combine study in the fields of Visual Arts and Design.

The first year provides a strong foundation in visual and design concepts. In second year, the Visual Arts component is based on studio practice and related theory and history studies. The studio processes cover textiles, painting and sculpture - with support studies in drawing, printmaking, photography, video, installation and digital image making. In the Design component students are introduced to a range of design techniques and practices across a number of conceptual, social and industry contexts including visual communication design, innovations in design practice and sustainability and ethics. Student work is shown throughout the year in gallery spaces in the Faculty. The final year culminates in a major project that allows students to develop a significant work in their chosen field. This work is included as part of the Graduate Show, a public exhibition of work held in the Faculty.

Work Integrated Learning

Undertaking a work integrated learning (WIL) experience during your university education is a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.

The Bachelor of Creative Arts uses as its foundation the principles of 'embedded' work-integrated learning: throughout their studies, students participate in a series of simulated workplaces in their chosen major. In the Visual Arts, students take part in studio work and present their work in gallery and other public settings. They also develop the skills to articulate their practice through artist statements and other documents that are an essential part of a career in the creative industries. In Design, students undertake a range of client-focused projects, responding to the briefs and parameters of projects in marketing, product design and web design.

Through these experiences, students apply their skills to a real-world context, and gain an understanding of the professional practice and industry standards.

Honours

On completion of the Bachelor of Creative Arts, high achieving students may apply to undertake an additional Honours year.

Students considering Honours in Creative Arts are encouraged to enrol in CACS331 Contemporary Theory and Research Practice in their final year of their BCA.

For more information see Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours).
