Master of Philosophy (Nursing) | 2019

Course Structure

To qualify for award of the degree, the Master of Philosophy (Nursing), a candidate must successfully complete at least 96 credit points, comprised of 24 credit points of coursework and a 72-credit points' thesis, as detailed below.

Please note, the normal full-time study pattern requires enrolment in 48 credit points of subjects per year in accordance with the table below, for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years. Part-time study is also available in most cases.

Coursework

All candidates complete one semester (24 credit points) of coursework in the first six months. Between 6-24 credit points must be completed from research training skills subjects offered by the Faculty. All candidates will also complete modules from the suite of seminars and workshops coordinated by the Graduate Research School. Modules which develop thesis writing skills will be emphasised.

In order to progress to the research component, Master of Philosophy (Nursing) candidates must complete the course work research subjects with an average of 65%, including 65% in each research training skills subject. Candidates progressing to the research component will have developed their specific research topic before commencing the research component. Candidates not meeting the progression requirement into Semester 2 may be offered an alternative of transferring into the Graduate Certificate or Master's program dependent on outcomes achieved.

A thesis of 35,000-50,000 words or three papers submitted and/or accepted for publication will be submitted for examination for award of MPhil degree. Two examiners will review the submission and both will be external to UOW.
Rules and procedures for HDR degrees by Thesis are listed in the Course Rules. HDR candidates are urged to be familiar with the Code of Practice - Supervision and General Course Rules governing Thesis and Research Degrees, including the regulations regarding preparation and submission of the thesis. Under the current higher education legislation, it is not possible for candidates in a research degree to exit with a coursework degree. Candidates may transfer between research degrees or cease HDR enrolment and apply for admission to a coursework program as a new course. International Students

International students may also be able to enrol in one or more of the following subjects with approval from the Supervisor and the Head of Postgraduate Studies of their school.

RESH900 or RESH901 Fundamentals for HDR Writing is designed for international students who are from a Non-English speaking background to help them with their thesis writing skills in the early stages of their degree.
