Course summary

The Doctor of Philosophy (Physics) is the direct path to become a scientist and an academic with worldwide career opportunities.

This degree covers condensed matter physics, magnetism and superconductivity, semiconductor and optical physics, materials and applied physics, theoretical physics, surface science and thin film technology, biomolecular and atmospheric physics, photonics, optical sensors, quantum devices and technologies. These areas are further diversified via close collaborations in high energy physics, astronomy and astrophysics.

The interdisciplinary flexible nature of research projects, available at both the Wollongong and Innovation campuses, allows students to undertake in-depth research using state-of-the-art research facilities. They also open up opportunities to collaborate with our partners in Australia and abroad, including ANSTO, CSIRO, Australian Synchrotron and NASA, where our graduates find exciting job opportunities. 

Physics academics and research staff are high calibre researchers at the international stage and are available for mentoring and supervision in the core research programs offered within this degree.

Our graduates are spread around the world working at and leading research and academic units at Harvard University, Cornell University, MIT, Brookhaven National Laboratory, University of Wollongong, University of Sydney, University of Leuven, University of Auckland, PTB Berlin, NIMS Japan and holding consulting, managing, executive positions in private companies and government organisations, such as DST, IMB Bank, BHP, IP Australia, Bureau of Meteorology, Australian Telescope National Facility, etc.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Honours degree with 2nd class Division 1 or higher; Research Masters with at least ⅔ of the degree comprising a thesis. UOW Masters of Research with WAM70+; Coursework Masters with a substantial thesis and WAM75+ or GPA 3.2 out of 4. Other forms of research experience will also be considered.
