The Diploma of Medical and Health Sciences offers a comprehensive foundation in chemical and biological sciences where students gain an understanding of applied sciences, including the anatomical, molecular and physiological processes of human health and function. Students are provided with a range of learning experiences and opportunities in science discipline-based subjects which provide students with the experience of working in University of Wollongong (UOW) science laboratories. Students are provided with dedicated support tutorials to prepare them for success in their university studies.


We offer a range of blended course delivery options.  However, we encourage students to choose on-campus classes where they are offered. For classes that cannot be held on campus due to physical distancing requirements, or for students unable to come on campus due to COVID-19 related circumstances, online delivery will continue to be offered, wherever possible.

Students are required to complete a number and variety of assessment tasks related to their study in each subject. Assessment tasks are designed to promote learning range and each subject includes a range of assessment tasks that allow the assessment of all learning outcomes and enable students to demonstrate achievement. Subject outlines for each subject contain an overview of subject objectives, an assessment schedule and an explanation of assessment components.
Common assessment types include quizzes, presentations, laboratory practicals, exams and reports.

Units of Study

Session 1 - 24 credit points.

Students must take one Chemistry subject in each session. Students who have achieved a result of 65% or better in HSC Chemistry take DSCI107 and DSCI111. All other students take DSCI106 and DSCI110.

DSCI106 Foundation Chemistry: Properties of Matter is a pre-requisite for DSCI110 Foundation Chemistry: Reactions and Structures. Students cannot enrol in DSCI110 unless they pass DSCI106 with a minimum result of 50%.

DSCI107 Chemistry 1A: Introductory Physical and General Chemistry is a pre-requisite for DSCI111 Chemistry 1B Structure and Reactivity of Molecules for Life. Students cannot enrol in DSCI111 unless they pass DSCI107 with a minimum result of 50%.

DMHS100 Human Structure and Function and DMHS150 Fundamental Concepts in Food and Nutrition are pre-requisites for DMHS150 Healthy Ageing. Students cannot enrol in DMHS151 unless they pass DMHS100 and DMHS150 with a minimum result of 50%.

Why choose this course

Career opportunities: Opportunities in the health, medical, medical research and clinical health fields (eg as a research scientist, medical or clinical technician, laboratory manager, pathology laboratory technician) in the areas of neuroscience, thermal physiology, biomechanics, diabetes and metabolic disorders, functional anatomy, respiratory and cardiorespiratory function.

A recognised Higher Education Diploma qualification is awarded upon completion, which can be used to pursue entry level career opportunities. 

Students who successfully complete any four subjects in the Diploma of Medical and Health Sciences are entitled to be awarded an Undergraduate Certificate in Medical and Health Sciences.

Pathways from the Qualification

Entry Pathway:

If you achieve a final mark of at least 50 per cent in all subject in the Diploma of Medical and Health Sciences you will receive entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences, the Bachelor of Nutrition Science, or the Bachelor of Exercise Science at the University of Wollongong with specified credit of up to 48 credit points for subjects in the compulsory core components of these degrees.

Students may need to take some 100-level subjects to bring them to the required level in designated disciplines.
