Bachelor of Health and Physical Education (Dean's Scholar)

Course summary

Health and Physical Education teachers educate and promote a range of movement areas including games and sports, dance, gymnastics, aquatics and athletics. They also promote healthy lifestyle issues in schools to encourage lifelong movement, healthy behaviours associated with mental health, drugs, good nutrition, self-esteem development, knowledge about sexuality and sexual health; and interpersonal skills.

The Bachelor of Health and Physical and Health (Dean's Scholar) is a program for high-achieving students who wish to continue their studies through honours and research degrees.

As a Dean's Scholar you will make a scholarly contribution to your field of study and to UOW. You will have access to an academic mentor, extended library privileges, invitations to attend school workshops and seminars, and networking events. There's also the opportunity for casual employment in the UOW Faculty of Social Sciences, community research, or projects supervised by leading practitioners or scholars for 15 hours per year.

This degree gives you expert theory and professional experience for employment as a Health and Physical Education teacher. You may also gain employment in educational environments such as Game Development Officers in Sports. You will learn through face-to-face delivery in classrooms, online learning, and school and community settings.

You will complete extensive professional experience throughout your degree which allows you to learn by observation and apply your skills in the classroom. You will also have opportunities for rural and international professional experiences, to study overseas with UOW's international exchange and study abroad partners, and to join international cultural immersion programs.

You can apply for the Honours program, which is embedded in third/fourth year involving a research project under academic supervision. Entry to honours is based on application and merit.

What you will study

You will study physical and health education subjects including games and sports, rhythmic movement, mental health and sexuality, relationships, curriculum and pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching), anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, educational foundations, and movement skills. You will also study broader complementary subjects including Aboriginal Education, Information and Communication Technology, Learners with Exceptional Needs, Educational Research, Communication, and Risk and Behaviour Management.

Recommended Studies: Any 2 units of Science or Personal Development, Health & Physical Education.

Entry to the Dean's Scholar degree is competitive.

This program is for students currently completing their Higher School Certificate; an interstate equivalent or an International Baccalaureate in an on-shore Australian High School. Applicants who achieve an appropriate score in one of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:

  • Overseas Year 12 qualification, equivalent to the Higher School Certificate in Australia.
  • A previous Australian Year 12 Higher School Certificate, ie ATAR, UAI, TER, OP, or equivalent
  • A score in the International Baccalaureate equivalent to the required ATAR for this course.
  • Australian Qualification Framework (AQF): Advanced Diploma or Diploma
  • TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC)
  • Minimum record of attendance, equal to 1/6 of a bachelor degree from an approved university, provided there is no exclusion or suspension.

    Course Learning Outcomes

    Students who graduate from the Bachelor of Health and Physical Education (Dean’s Scholar) will:

    1. Demonstrate broad and coherent pedagogical and content knowledge for the teaching profession.
    2. Demonstrate pedagogical & content knowledge required to integrate across curricula areas.
    3. Have well-developed skills in student-focused pedagogy and practice to manipulate mandatory documents related to policy, student learning and integrate teaching across curricula areas.
    4. Engage in mentored and self-regulated development activities both within and outside the university setting.
    5. Demonstrate a high quality understanding of the connection between research and theory and the ability to use this knowledge to inform their practice as a teacher.
    6. Display well-developed communication and evaluation skills as a reflective practitioner, articulating and analysing the complex and dynamic role of the teacher in the learning environment.
    7. Apply pedagogical skills and content knowledge to solve educational problems, integrate technology in the classroom, plan for all learners, apply pedagogical strategies for differentiation and reflect on their practice.
    8. Demonstrate higher order thinking skills associated with evolving educational climate.
    9. Demonstrate the ability to autonomously apply educational ethics that value student differences, the importance of differentiation and social justice.   

    Course Structure

    The Bachelor of Health and Physical Education (Dean’s Scholar) requires the following:

    1. The successful completion of 192 credit points comprising:
      1. 30 core subjects (186cp);
      2. 1 elective subject (6cp); and
      3. No more than 60 credit points will be at 100 level.
    2. The successful completion of the Professional Experience components embedded in the course.
    3. Students must maintain a minimum weighted average mark (WAM) of 80% in each year of enrolment, from and including Year 2, to remain enrolled in the Dean’s Scholar program.
